Description:

The Mangrove Inventory and Assessment of Abandoned, Undeveloped and Underutilized Fishpond is a nine-month study being undertaken by the DENR, in cooperation with BFAR and LGUs, in the 13 coastal municipalities of Zamboanga Sibugay. The project main activity includes inventory and assessment of all abandoned, undeveloped and underutilized (AUU) fishponds in Zamboanga Peninsula with the end in view of reverting these AUU fishponds to mangrove forest. The identification and assessment of the AUU fishponds shall lead to the formulation and approval of fishpond lease agreement (FLA) cancellation and reversion rules and guidelines, conduct of suitability assessment for reforestation of unused FLA areas in the region, and the actual reversion of suitable unused FLA areas to mangrove forests. The project aims to create resource efficient waste management systems by reducing Unintentionally Produced Persistent Organic Pollutants (U-POPs) emissions through the introduction of BAT & BEP in open burning sources and achieving approximately 90% reduction of the current Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and Polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) releases at pilot demonstration sites in participating countries. Description:

The Dugong and Marine Turtles Comprehensive Biological Research in Mayo and Pujada Bay Protected Seascape and Landscape is a research project of the DENR 11 in collaboration with the City of Mati, RICXI-DOSCST (Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology) and the Provincial ENRO. The Project has two major components: a) determination of dugong and marine turtle population sizes and distribution in Mayo Bay and Pujada Bay and b) comparative analysis through bioassay of tissue samples of various large marine mammals. The results of this study will be used to determine mitigating measures to minimize the threats of these marine organism against constant anthropogenic activities. Further, this will provide substantial understanding parallel to the behavior of these animals in the wild which will be used to uphold the laws stipulated in RA 9147 for the sustainability of marine biodiversity in the area.
