Quezon City – Following closure of two GIZ-assisted projects – the Preparation of a National REDD+ Mechanism for Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Conservation of Biodiversity in the Philippines or the National REDD+ System Philippines (REDD+) Project and the Protected Area Management Enhancement (PAME) Project, GIZ turned over 16 motor vehicles to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). This complies with Article II, Section 2.2 of the Implementation Agreements of both projects, which states that equipment or materials supplied for the Projects on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Germany shall become the property of the Republic of the Philippines by the projects’ end.
The commissioning of these vehicles for DENR’s use was held during the flag raising ceremony at the DENR Central Office on February 9, 2018. GIZ Principal Advisor Dr. Klaus Schmitt passed on a symbolic car key to DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu to mark officially the turnover.
The DENR, through the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) and the Forest Management Bureau (FMB), implemented PAME and REDD+ Projects, respectively, each in tandem with GIZ. These were technical assistance projects funded by the Federal Republic of Germany - Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety International Climate Initiative (BMUB-IKI).
