The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Region 9, together with USAID’s Protect Wildlife project, hosted the second Regional Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) Summit in Zamboanga City.
PAMB members and stakeholders from the 12 protected areas in Region 9 met to discuss the need for more collaboration to manage their protected areas effectively, particularly in areas of conservation, protection, development and enforcement. Resource persons from other regions in Mindanao shared with Region 9 participants their experiences in working together with local government, civil society and other concerned stakeholders to manage and develop their protected areas.
At the two-day summit, Protect Wildlife assisted the participants from the different PAMBs in updating the overall status and latest development of their respective protected areas, which would feed into their action plans. The project also hosted a learning tour in Pasonanca Natural Park and Santa Cruz Islands to share best practices in managing terrestrial, coastal and marine protected areas in Zamboanga City. Towards the end of the event, the summit also sought to lay the foundation for a PAMB Executive Committee for Region 9, which would link and strengthen ties with other protected area networks in Mindanao.
