The local government of Brooke’s Point introduced to the public its new ambassador for environmental and wildlife protection: Makmak, a mascot depicting the blue-naped parrot (Tanygnathus lucionensis), which is also one of the highly poached and illegally traded birds in Palawan.

Makmak, or short for makabayan (pro-country) and makakalikasan (pro-environment) in Filipino, is also depicted as a forest patroller to promote the importance of protecting the rich forests and wildlife in Brooke’s Point and in Mount Mantalingahan Protected Landscape.

Makmak was launched in a program filled with games and activities organized by the graduates of USAID Protect Wildlife’s intensive training on behavior change communication for conservation. (PWP/ Lawrence San Diego)
