In order to report on and discuss the progress of implementation and its proposed sustainability plan, the project “Strengthening the Marine Protected Areas to Conserve Marine Key Biodiversity Areas in the Philippines” or SMARTSeas PH Project held its 8th Project Board Meeting at Hive Hotel and Convention Place in Quezon City on the 20th of August 2019. Present during the meeting were members of the Project Board from various national government agencies and non-government organizations. Mr. Titon Mitra, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, also attended.
Relative to the drafting of sustainability plan of the project, Assistant Secretary and concurrent BMB Director Ricardo Calderon recommended a closer and engaged coordination with the PENROs and CENROs to gather support and facilitate effective implementation of the plan.
Other highlight of the meeting was the approval of funding for the development of the Marine Litter National Program of Action (NPOA) by UNDP and the DENR to establish an enabling policy framework for marine biodiversity conservation in general and to address problems with plastics in particular.
The SMARTSeas PH Project in partnership with UNEP, BMB and Planet Communities Organized for Resource Allocation (Planet CORA) launched the CleanSeas Pilipinas Campaign in support of the international year of the reef and the UN environment global marine litter campaign.
