With a stroke of a pen, another significant milestone in the ongoing effort to protect, conserve and manage the country’s natural resources through strong private sector involvement has been reached, as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC), and Steel Asia Foundation Incorporated (SAFI) inked Memorandums of Agreement on February 27, 2020 to implement environmental projects that were highly deemed crucial to the attainment of this purpose.
As a party to the agreement, the MMPC would shell out financial assistance amounting to PhP 2.3 million through its corporate social responsibility program for the establishment, maintenance, monitoring, and protection of a 30-hectare agroforestry project in Siniloan, Laguna. The project would be implemented in a span of five years. Likewise, SAFI agreed to pump PhP 1.9 million into similar agroforestry project in a 23-hectare forestland area in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. For its part, the DENR would ensure that the communities residing within the vicinities of these project sites actively participate.
DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu said that bamboo, which is a high-value crop, would be planted in both project sites. He added that these projects would improve the socio-economic conditions of the local communities and reduce their susceptibility to natural hazards and calamities. (FASPS/ Evelyn M. Juanillo)
