The Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) facilitated the conduct of the 12th East Asian Seas (EAS) Partnership Council Meeting on July 22, 2020. In a virtual meeting, country and non-country partners discussed crucial matters concerning the partnership’s continuous operation and sustainability.
The meeting highlighted the organization's continued initiative toward strengthening partnerships, with the inclusion of the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) as a New Non-Country Partner of PEMSEA and the designation of the Coastal and Ocean Management Institute (COMI) as PEMSEA’s new Regional Center of Excellence in Sustainable Coastal Development.
With the challenges imposed upon the organization by the pandemic, PEMSEA members had to discuss various scenarios and possible implications on the organization's post-2020 sustainability plan. These include the conduct of upcoming East Asian Seas Congress that is originally set in the Kingdom of Cambodia in 2021.
Despite these challenges, countries have reaffirmed their commitment to support PEMSEA through in-kind and voluntary contributions to sustain its operations. (FASPS/ Hannah Ritual)
